Syndrome X…The Treatment!
April 4th, 2011
Dr. Jess Armine We have been talking about Insulin Resistance syndrome or Syndrome X which is a metabolic syndrome named for a group of risk factors that occur together that increases the risk for coronary artery disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. All of the syndrome’s risk factors are related to obesity and insulin resistance.
Remember, insulin helps blood sugar (glucose) enter cells. If you have insulin resistance, your body doesn’t respond to insulin, and blood sugar cannot get into cells. As a result, the body produces more and more insulin. This affects kidney function raising the level of blood fats, such as triglycerides. This is what causes coronary artery disease, stroke, and type 2 diabetes.

What Causes Circles Under Your Eyes?
March 4th, 2011
Dr. Jess Armine A recent article on CNN Health recommended Vitamin Creams, allergy medicines, cosmetic filler injections or laser surgery…wow, talk about missing the mark.
Well, to give credit where credit is due, they did mention allergies and better sleep but their solutions to these were suboptimal.
Anti-Energy Drinks
March 4th, 2011
Dr. Jess Armine New and dangerous drinks being sold near you!!! These are the so-called anti-energy drinks and are gaining popularity.
These are sodas that sedate rather than energize. Beverages such as Malava Novocaine, Drank, Unwind, Mary Jane’s Relaxing Soda and Slow Cow (sold in Canada) are marketed as helping people unwind. As more sedating sodas enter the market, some beverage makers have taken relaxation to another level by producing sodas laced with marijuana or ingredients to mimic that drug.

Depression in Philadelphia
January 4th, 2011
Dr. Jess Armine In the Philadelphia area, depression is a major problem. Proper evaluation and diagnosis is important.
Depression can be endogenous (coming from the inside…genetic predisposition (mood disorders), medication side effects, disease side effects [hypothyroidism, MS, etc.] or exogenous (coming from the outside…poor nutrition [lack of Vitamin D, etc.], lack of exercise, inter-personal problems). Usually, there are components of both. Some symptoms of depression include:
• Depressed Mood
• Loss of interest or pleasure
• Weight loss or gain
• Sleeping difficulties
• Fatigue/loss of energy
• Irritability
• Problems concentrating, making decisions, with memory
• Feelings of worthlessness, helplessness or hopelessness
• Inappropriate guilt
• Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
