Depression in Philadelphia

In the Philadelphia area, depression is a major problem. Proper evaluation and diagnosis is important.

Depression can be endogenous (coming from the inside…genetic predisposition (mood disorders), medication side effects, disease side effects [hypothyroidism, MS, etc.] or exogenous (coming from the outside…poor nutrition [lack of Vitamin D, etc.], lack of exercise, inter-personal problems). Usually, there are components of both. Some symptoms of depression include:
• Depressed Mood
• Loss of interest or pleasure
• Weight loss or gain
• Sleeping difficulties
• Fatigue/loss of energy
• Irritability
• Problems concentrating, making decisions, with memory
• Feelings of worthlessness, helplessness or hopelessness
• Inappropriate guilt
• Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

The “Brain” Vitamins

The B vitamins are eight water-soluble vitamins that were once considered a single vitamin, but are actually chemically distinct nutrients that tend to be present in similar foods, including meat, eggs, dairy products, green vegetables and whole grains. As a group, they are responsible for several important functions, including supporting metabolism, enhancing immune and nervous system function, maintaining healthy skin and muscle tone, and promoting cell growth and division.
