Autism is on the rise in Philadelphia and the rest of the world. In the past 20 years the incidence of autism has gone from 1:10,000 children to 1:91!!!!

There’s been much dispute over the possible causation of Autism and research is conflicted. Some research points solely to a genetic cause, some to a solely environmental cause but most research in the biomedical sciences points to a combination of genetic predisposition, and environmental burdens (heavy metals, pesticides, etc.). As is often true, the middle ground is where you usually find the truth.

Depression in Philadelphia

In the Philadelphia area, depression is a major problem. Proper evaluation and diagnosis is important.

Depression can be endogenous (coming from the inside…genetic predisposition (mood disorders), medication side effects, disease side effects [hypothyroidism, MS, etc.] or exogenous (coming from the outside…poor nutrition [lack of Vitamin D, etc.], lack of exercise, inter-personal problems). Usually, there are components of both. Some symptoms of depression include:
• Depressed Mood
• Loss of interest or pleasure
• Weight loss or gain
• Sleeping difficulties
• Fatigue/loss of energy
• Irritability
• Problems concentrating, making decisions, with memory
• Feelings of worthlessness, helplessness or hopelessness
• Inappropriate guilt
• Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide
