What is different at our office?

Inclusive of standard chiropractic treatment, we integrate traditional health practices with "alternative" or "complementary" treatment modalities. Through the use of the latest laboratory neurotransmitter testing and other diagnostic techniques and consultation with medical colleagues, we create a focus on treatment and prevention through nutrition, detoxification programs, therapeutic diets, targeted amino acid therapy, vitamins and/or stress management techniques.

    What is chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a branch of the healing arts based upon the understanding that good health depends, in part, upon a normally functioning nervous system (especially the spine, and the nerves extending from the spine to all parts of the body).

What can I expect on my first visit?

The first thing a chiropractor will do is ask you about the health complaints about which you are chiefly concerned. The DC will also ask about your family history, dietary habits, other care you may have had (chiropractic, osteopathic, medical, etc.), your job, and other questions designed to help determine the nature of your illness and the best way to go about treating the problem.
A physical examination will be performed in accordance with your DC's clinical judgement, which may include x-rays, laboratory analysis and other diagnostic procedures. In addition, a careful spinal examination and analysis will be performed to detect any structural abnormalities which may be affecting or causing your condition. All of these elements are important components of your total health profile, and vital to the doctor of chiropractic in evaluating your problem.

    What is functional medicine?

Functional medicine is a dynamic approach to assessing, preventing and treating complex chronic disease. Functional Medicine helps clinicians identify and ameliorate dysfunctions in the physiology and the biochemistry of the human body as a primary method of improving patient health.
Functional Medicine acknowledges that chronic disease is almost always preceded by a lengthy period of declining function in one or more of the body's systems. Returning patients to health requires reversing(or substantially improving)the specific dysfunctions that have contributed to the disease state.
Functional medicine is an evolution in the practice of health care that addresses the whole person, not just an isolated set of symptoms. We consider the complex web of interactions in the patient's history, physiology and lifestyle that can lead to illness.

What are the neurotransmitters and why are they important?

The brain, serving as the 'mission control' of the nervous system, uses neurotransmitters as chemical messengers to keep us happy, healthy, and sleeping well. Maintaining balanced neurotransmitter levels is essential to good health. With a finely-tuned nervous system, you'll experience better moods, have more energy, less anxiousness, sleep better, and live a healthier life.

    What is "nutritional neuromodulation"?

After a complete health and nutritional history, physical examination and appropriate urinary and/or salivary neurotransmitter testing, Dr. Armine will prescribe a course of nutritional treatment usually consisting of vitamins and Targeted Amino Acid Therapy (TAAT). The specific combination of ingredients will support the body's ability to make hormones and neurotransmitters.

What is Targeted Amino Acid Therapy (TAAT) and does it work?

TAAT provides your body with the amino acid precursors (building blocks) for your neurotransmitters. For example, if you want to increase serotonin (and melatonin) you provide the body with 5-HTP because Tryptophan becomes 5-HTP which becomes Serotonin which ultimately becomes melatonin. Testing provides the exact levels of the neurotransmitters and stress hormones which allows the doctor to target the therapy exactly. Please go to my 10/12/09 blog entitled "Does TAAT really work?" for more information.

    What does recent research show?

Research has shown that many of today's most common health concerns, including depression, anxiety, insomnia, chronic fatigue, etc. can result from imbalances in the nervous system. However, daily stressors, emotional disturbances, chronic infections, and a poor diet are some of the factors that can disrupt neurotransmitter balance, potentially leading to poor health.
